    Diet with low oil/fats quantities?

Heck, everything in moderation. I'm all for cutting unnecessary fat from cooking - that actually sounds like a pretty sensible thing to do to me, given there are plenty of foods that are naturally high in good fats. And as for avoiding bread and pasta, you've got to be kidding me! Definitely...

What's the healthiest food for BREAKFAST?

And 'healthy' is a relative term. If you're overweight, a lighter breakfast is probably healthiest; if you're a marathon runner, the healthiest brekky for you will probably have plenty of fuel in it. For me, I consider anything with enough carbs/protein to get me going and not too much fat or...

ISO advice making pumpkin pies using fresh pumpkin

Jumping in as a long-time lurker - but you can also make a pumpkin pie with a green (non-ripe) pumpkin. We read about it in one of the 'Little House' books and gave it a try, they tasted great! A little different in flavour to one made with a ripe pumpkin, but just different different, not bad...

    Outrageous Restaurant Portions ...WhoWhereWhy?

Yea, same here - I mean, I know you can ask for a doggy bag, but it isn't the norm, and to be honest, I could count on one hand the times I haven't been able to finish my meal. I know you were kidding, but actually in our experiences, Americans were remarkably generous. So perhaps the...

    Outrageous Restaurant Portions ...WhoWhereWhy?

American portions definitely get a mention all the way over here in New Zealand. When we were planning our trip to America last year, a lot of people mentioned to watch out for that. We actually found we got a bit of a range - which made it hard to know how much to order! Some places served...

    Quick food safety question...

I haven't been on here for a long time... but I still know where to come back to when I've got a question about food safety  We're expecting a baby, and naturally there's been some conversation with preggy friends about food safety etc. So... can someone explain why it's dangerous to...

    Thanksgiving 2008 - Menu/Dinner Plans/Recipes

We're having Thanksgiving for the first time this year. Obviously, it's not a holiday in New Zealand, but my DH is studying, and his supervisors both have wives who originally came from America. So we're getting together with them for a traditional Thanksgiving. I'm really looking forward to it...

What Do/Did You Watch With Your Kids?

Not with my kids, but with my much younger brothers and sisters - spongebob! "...Now that we're men, we have facial hair! Now that we're men, we change our underwear!.." That tune (and those words) made me crack up. And I used to play Spyro on the playstation with them. That...

Do I have a Deal for You!

I don't know... I'm not one of the people who creates the demands for these photos - I buy the odd cooking magazine, and that's it. I have no real interest in seeing anyone's baby photos unless I happen to know them  But, should I happen to be famous (which, thankfully, I'm not and...

    Our pets

Here's a photo of our Jasper taken a month or so ago. I think I posted a thread about him at the time - he turned up as a stray where I work. He's a cutie. He's got this thing with our polished wooden floor in the kitchen... he zooms down the passage, flops full-tilt onto the floor, slides a...

    Much needed kitchen item

Not the only one - we don't have one either. Maybe it's a cultural thing, cos I don't know anyone who has. Although, I must admit that I often leave the TV in the lounge on while I'm in the kitchen, and pop through if it sounds interesting

What On Earth is Wrong With People...

It’s just ridiculous, isn’t it? I can’t begin to imagine why anyone would do that! I’m glad the judge arranged for the girl to change her name.

    Splenda v. Equal/Sweet & Low

 Really?? I'd be on a sugar high all day! (Except I guess it wouldn't be a sugar high, huh?) I thought I liked my coffee really sweet with a heaped tsp of sugar, and I've found sweetners sweeter than sugar. Completely agree about the cream though. I LOVE my coffee with cream...

    White spotty blackberries

Blackberries grow wild on our farm, and we see ones like that from time to time. I've never known what causes them, but usually when we see them, it's only the odd berry. It would be frustrating to have a whole lot like that. Any berry farms in your area? I bet they'd know what it was.
