    Saute Pan: Quarts and Size

Don't forget to check out Canadian Tire, Meg. We have often found their prices and quality more than competitive. Also, if you want to shop on line, you can buy Paderno, which is pretty expensive, but which you can leave to your children. And it is made in Canada.

    Trouble sleeping

I have learned that propping a book on the bed, so it can't fall and wake me, light as low as it can be, while still allowing me to read works. When I can't sleep, it is because I am worried, so if I read and get involved in the story, I think calmly about the plot of the story not my worries...

Anyone familiar with the Big Green Egg?

The Egg is great because the ceramic body keeps the heat in so you can grill in really cold weather and cook more food with less fuel.

Anyone familiar with the Big Green Egg?

The Egg got a great workout this weekend. Ribs yesterday (five racks), and a nine pound prime rib today. I can see that as summer comes, we will not be using the oven or the stove top for cooking.

    People and Salt

I started reducing salt in cooking many years ago, and use practically none, now. I like a little salt on many foods, and prefer to put it on after cooking. My husband uses less, now, and we avoid processed foods.

What is your weather like right now?

It is hard to believe that all of North America is covered by this storm, or the one in front of it. The wind woke us this morning. It was still above freezing but the temperature has now dropped way below and we have had rain, snow, and winds from the west, south and east during the day...

What is your weather like right now?

Well, Bilby, we could use a little of your heat here, as well. It is -35C (-20sF), but the sun is shining for the second day in a row, so I am feeling a little more like a human, instead of a cranky blob. I am watching the windows to see when the sun will have moved enough morning and evening...

What is your weather like right now?

We got up to temperatures in the -30s below 0, and below freezing, no matter which system. It has gone up somewhat, and will go up some more tomorrow, but then we are back to the -30s again by Wednesday.

What is your weather like right now?

We have been having sunny weather during this cold snap. This morning, we woke to -37 C which is about -35 F. Mighty cold. No snow, but the sun was dimmed for most of the morning by ice fog. Very little humidity, but whatever there was formed ice fog. Lovely to see the sun, though I prefer...

What is your weather like right now?

Hmm cold for you. We are at -25C, right now, and headed down.

What is your weather like right now?

We are having some weird weather. It has been way above freezing for several days, and we have lost most of our snow. Today the wind has been from all directions, the temperature has dropped since we got up, and it is snowing. We lost our power for a couple of hours, and it just flickered...

What is your weather like right now?

Happy New Year, all. We had a sunny but very cold day, and tonight and tomorrow will be even colder.

I REALLY wish I liked Slow Cooker Meals

I will pass that on. I didn't get one for daughter, but her in-laws gave her one for Christmas. I'm thinking if she put the stuff in the fridge in a separate container, and then poured it into the crock pot, it would heat up faster. Does the meat come out a little soggy by the time the...

What is your weather like right now?

Well we had thaw, followed by -20, and now we are at freezing again, with light snow or rain coming down. Yesterday we woke to a beautiful red sunrise which of course turned to heavy cloud. DH gave me a S.A.D. light for Christmas, and I will tell you in a week or so if it does replace being in...

What is your weather like right now?

Well we are under a flash freeze warning. It has been raining for just over 24 hours, and there is a cold front coming in, bringing snow along with the freezing. I hope everyone who has to travel for the holidays are safe. I am glad my daughter is safely at her in-laws, and by the time they...

What is your weather like right now?

Today, we can watch the snow disappear as the rain pours down. Our road will be a mess, since the snow is melting and the road was probably not thoroughly frozen before it got covered in snow. It is +7, a silly number for Dec. 23.

Very nice newsletter. I didn't know you did one so it was a nice surprise.

What would be a good idea to store recipes?

Hmm, I have tried many of these, but I end up with my favourites in plastic sleeves sitting inside my recipe binder cover, not where they belong. And when I need a recipe, I frequently head to the computer, and google, and then end up in places like this where I browse until my desire to cook...

What is your weather like right now?

Hmm, I love the heat, but Christmas would be hard without snow. I could spend November and the first half of December somewhere hot and sunny, but then it is time to head up and get a little cross-country skiing in. The grandkids are here and will be out tomorrow making a snowman if the rain...

    Broken bones

Charlie, be sure to let your son get it all out. He must be feeling terrible, blaming himself far more than you ever could. Good thought going out to your whole family. Luckily, at four, kids heal well, better than ever, these days.

What is your weather like right now?

Wow, that is hot! My Big Green Egg would cook a fine turkey. What are you having instead of your usual Christmas fare? Our temps are about freezing and going up to +3 today, +5 tomorrow and some rain predicted. I hope we don't lose all the snow, and that the wind turns around, so we get...

Microwave kills 99% of germs in sponges

I really think that forgetting sponges altogether, using dish clothes, preferably those made of bamboo, putting them in the wash after a day's use, or less, is by far the best way. You can bleach them or the drying temperature should be high enough to kill the bacteria.

    Things are looking up!!!

Mikki, put enough that you can see it grow, but little enough you won't be tempted to take it out for the first crisis. Any month there is something left in your account, you can always make another deposit. I liked the suggestion that you look around for a chance to do some studying while at...

    Cooking for dummies

I echo The Joy of Cooking, and the Cooks Illustrated magazines. Also, you cannot learn every thing at once, so be prepared to go back and re-read. I have been making bread and rolls for more that forty years, but I was just following recipes. I have learned some of the basics, now, and can...
