Saturday, May 4, 2024, what are you eating?

That earlier thread made me think to make this, @blissful. I haven't cooked much lately - been eating a lot of leftovers from the freezer, since I've been busy in the garden. Today was the first time I cooked anything for a while, and I had a pound of mushrooms I had to use soon, so I made...

    Mix of Cooked Grains

I add a lot of whole grains to lentil dishes - not traditional, but the nutrients go well together. I rarely mix the grains, but the lentils I do often mix, mainly for the textures. Most of grains take longer than the lentils, so I often cook them in the Instant pot, sometimes completely...

Yes, dragn, you're right - it's dill. I thought everyone knew that! I went and added it in there - you weren't able to do that more than 20 minutes after post something, way back, but now you can do it, quite a while after; I don't know what the cutoff time is now. Speaking of dill...

Dukat and Tetra are the two dill varieties I grow mostly for the leaf part - they would eventually go to seed, but not as quickly as others. The Tetra I tried once in hydroponics, but the roots grew so fast that I could hardly pull it out of the basket - after that, I only grew the Dukat in the...

    Black garlic-how is it fermented?

I thought about doing that in my small oven with the pilot light, increasing the size of the pilot until the bottom of the oven got hot enough. The air temp in that oven is about 120°f, but the floor of the oven is to hot to touch, due to the pilot light.

    Tips for using your microwave

I always reheat things (and believe me, I reheat a lot!) on 50%, sometimes less, as I'm not in that much of a hurry! The center is always cooler than the outer part, and would need to be stirred several times, on 100%, to keep from burning yourself on the hottest part, while the center is just...

    Ants in the spring....

I had that problem last year...well, almost every year, and no matter what I did, they came back! But Dollar General had a sale on a new product - STEM - and it was basically half price, buying 2, and there are two varieties, a spray bottle, that says "Kills Ants, Roaches, Flies", while the...

    Liver and onions anyone?

Mom used to make liver and onions, and the liver would always be overcooked, but I still liked it, as I've always liked organ meats (except one time when the urine smell of the beef kidney was worse than being in an unventilated room being cleaned with ammonia). Mom used to cook the onions...

Another hot day here today, too, getting to 86°, so not quite as bad as yesterday, but I bit the bullet and turned on the AC, but only because a friend was coming over later on. I basically got everything ready for the tomatoes tomorrow - I hardened them off for 4 days, with 4 hours of sun...

    Quick question about growing Tomatillos

Here's a photo showing those roots on those tomatillos, trying to grow - some of the tomatoes have a hint of them starting, but the 3 tomatillos have them on the half inch or so above the soil line. Stems on the tomatillos, showing the roots trying to grow above the soil. by pepperhead212, on...

Garlic for 2024, one new variety this year

The Music stores very well, and is one of the larger ones, as well. The Estoninan Red, while the largest I have grown, is also the worst one for storing, which is why I grow only 40-45 every season, and use it first (and plant the largest in Oct.). The Georgian Fire stores a little better, and...

Recommend me uses for rice flour!

I've made rice noodles with rice flour I've made by grinding up jasmine rice. Surprisingly, as popular as jasmine rice is, and as flavorful as it is, I've never seen commercial jasmine rice flour. It was delicious, but I've only done it a couple of times.

Life Changes and how to adjust cooking habits...

I've been eating a lot of the leftovers from my freezer lately, due to being so busy with garden things. Often, I even think about it far enough in advance that I remove it from the freezer, and thaw it overnight in the fridge, and by the time I reheat it, it needs much less time in the MW...

Or eat leftovers! Sometimes I cook a lot of some things, that I just can't cook a small amount of, and both freeze some, and eat leftovers.

Garlic for 2024, one new variety this year

Those garlic today, going crazy! Before it rained a couple weeks ago, I sprinkled some organic fish meal on the rows, and might do it another time soon. Garlic, on 4-29, the 2 right rows are Music, the next 2 are Estonian Red, which are the largest of all of them. by pepperhead212, on Flickr

    Garden 2024

I got up early today (for me, 7:30 am), because it is supposed to be hot today, and I wanted to harvest some stuff, and run up to the PO, and mail a couple of things. I checked my seeds I am sprouting, and all of my cukes sprouted in less than 24 hours, and almost all of the okra spouted in...

    Today's harvest

I always let my mint die off in the fall, then weedwack it level with the ground, after removing the driplines. This way, I'm not fighting with any of those old plants, when the new plants show up. I'm already getting 6-7" plants!

I got a lot of things done out there today, preparing for those tomatoes going in, though I'm going to have to wait until Thursday or later for that, as they are now forecasting a thunderstorm late Wednesday, so I'll have to play it by ear. I brought the tomatoes back inside today, after leaving...

2024 Edition - What are you baking?

About 3 days ago I started some rye bread, this time adding a cup of mashed potatoes to 1½ c rye flour, 1 c water, 1 tb caraway, and 1 tb yeast, and let it ferment, this time for the full 3 days. Today I continued with it, and ended up with a slightly larger loaf, in addition to the 2 lb loaf...

I put the tomatoes out late, to start hardening off, in this last of the cool weather. I'll put them out again tomorrow, after the sun is off that area, or maybe on the front porch, early - I'll wait and see. They are going to be planted sooner than I thought! Starting to harden off the...

    Garden 2024

Today I transplanted my eggplant seedlings - some aren't very large, but they will grow fast, now that they are in the larger pots. All of the pellets had the roots coming out of them. And the tomatoes are doing great, though a few are sort of small, since they are shaded, by larger plants...

Can you pan pop microwave popcorn

I still have an Air Popper in my basement! Haven't used it for years, because all I used it for was when I needed popcorn for something like caramel popcorn, or something like that, and I can't remember the last time I made any of those. I remember having to pour so much butter on it, to make...
