Fuming! 😡

My apartment complex has switched payment apps from Zego to Active Building this month.

When I signed onto the app for the first time it showed a significant past due amount.

It seemed odd to me because the previous app took my payment automatically on the first of each month.

I went to the office to seek an explanation and hopefully some assistance in correcting the information.

The manager was quick to explain, without looking at my account or lease, that they were still in the process of loading the new rents and that I should be patient and give them some time.

I asked what my new rent was projected to be and why that new amount would be in effect prior to receiving a change of terms or extension, without proper notice, no answer.

It’s frustrating and worrisome.

I will try to pay my rent by personal check on the first but I’m concerned that they will not accept it and the new system will not accept what it sees as a partial payment.

I need to start working the phone on Monday to see if I can find some information on my options.

Not surprised you are fuming (and worried) Aunt Bea. Sounds like they have messed things up entirely. Hope it all gets sorted satisfactorily for you.

Bought spinach, eggplant yesterday and will probably cook up the spinach and cream. Eggplant not sure yet, bake some slices? A vegie lasagna?
The chicken quarters (now chilled) will be deboned and cubed or shredded (I think). Not sure on the left over sauce from the slow-cooker, maybe reduce and save some.

Play games on computer, try to ignore kids upstairs jumping and thumping (raining outside) tried to tell them it's OK to jump on trampoline with an umbrella - but nobody's buying it.

Got the spinach cooked (YUM!) Got the eggplant baked (hope it's not too salty). Deboned and shredded the chicken.

games had to wait til I get back from...
Forgot going with son to drop van off for tire change. We leave it there and drop keys into a slot for him. He'll call in the morning when it's done. Much better than going at 7:45am in morning traffic!

I can play my games now... :)

We had friends who wanted to see our Alaska photos. With four people on the trip, there were a LOT of photos and short videos. I decided if they asked to sit through all of the photos, I'd feed them so I made spaghetti with meatballs, salad, and garlic bread for them along with a Costco-bought lemon-blueberry loaf for dessert.

Also, this weekend, we had a friend who we wanted to surprise by making dinner for her. Her husband handled a citrus salad and the wonderful ice cream cake. We made street tacos with homemade guacamole and salsa along with homemade tortillas.

It was a fun, but busy weekend. This week, I need to tunnel around the perimeter of my absolutely PACKED basement to install French drains and a sump pump.

Our French drains are installed outside of the basement walls, leading to the sump pump inside the house.
Not to say they can't be installed under the floor in the basement, but the old farmhouse I was in had that. I assumed, seeing as there were a couple of drains running into the sump pump, that they were coming from out side. When I had the exterior excavated and drains installed, the annual spring floods thru the basement immediately stopped! LOL.

Just saying....
and FYI, the house was on the top of a hill.... go figure!

How's that going? Good news, I hope.

The AC technician just left. He did the annual cleaning of our ductless airconditioning. The company that I have the maintenance contract with called this morning and asked if they could come today. I really prefer more warning, but the next appointment available is at the end of May, so I took the one today. One chore done for the year.

One annoyance. The technician had the remote control to turn it on and off, etc. It now shows temperatures in Fahrenheit. I tried fiddling with it to put it back to Celsius, but no luck. I will have to find the instruction manual and find that setting. At least I am 95% certain that I know where the manual is. I haven't looked at it in years. We got this AC about 10 or 15 years ago.

Thanks for asking.

I reached out to the local office of our State Senator and they gave me the contact information for a local attorney that is also the Executive Director of a local tenants rights organization. She gave me some very helpful information and has agreed to work on my behalf if things eventually go sideways.

They accepted my check the other day and assured me that they are working to resolve the issue.

They still haven’t been able to tell me what my projected rent increase will be.

I assume that the increase will be substantial, 55-60%. The rental market here has gone crazy. Some apartment complexes are repricing daily or weekly.

I don’t mind absorbing the increase as much as I mind the headaches of this new system. I feel bad for the young fellow in the office that has been tasked with fixing this. We’ll get through it.

I will continue to pay my regular monthly rent payment by check until things are straightened out.

an increase of 55 to 60%! That's incredible. I believe in Canada, or at least Quebec, the increases are controlled to 10 or 15%. I could be remembering wrong but ....

We don’t have any sort of rent control in this area, it’s strictly what the market will bear unless you qualify for some sort of government subsidy.

I’m ok with that, I really don’t like the government meddling in people’s business.

The free market will eventually sort it out.

"How much can a landlord raise rent in Canada?
This year, for example, rent increases for applicable properties are capped at 2.5 per cent in Ontario and three per cent in Manitoba. To raise more than that, a landlord needs permission from the body overseeing landlord-tenant disputes.Jan 25, 2024"

This is just to give you an example... different provinces have different rules. Same in the States I imagine. I know California has certain rules, so I imagine other States must do.
But no where have I ever read 55 to 60%!
