Didn't World War II get started on this day in 1941? Did it last till 1945 or longer?

December 7th 1941 was the day the attack on Pearl Harbor happened and the USA declared war.

V-E Day (Victory in Europe) was on May 8th, 1945.

Aug, 5th - Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
Aug. 9th - Atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki
Aug. 12-15 - Attempted Coup by the military over the Emperor to stop the surrender. (They wanted to continue fighting.)

V-J Day (Victory over Japan) is August 15, 1945 when Emperor Hirohito addressed his nation by radio (for the very first time) and announced the surrender of Japan.

(I liked History during my freshman year of High School.)

The Germans invaded Poland September 1, 1939. France declared war on Sept 3, and several other countries joined on Sept 10th.

WWII began in September 1939.

Some Americans mistakenly believe that WWII started when the United States was attacked by Japan on December 7, 1941.

Clearly, the hostilities that became WWII started before 12/7/41.

When the war was appropriately categorized as a World War is a different date. Perhaps it became a world war when Japan and the US became part of the picture. At that point, hostilities were no longer confined to Europe but expanded to include North America and Asia as well.

Even though hostilities between America and Japan broke out in 1941, Germany, Italy and Japan had signed the Tripartite Act in 1940 which brought the Axis Powers to full global envelopment. Axis states and holdings included: Manchuria, Mongolia, Philippines, Vietnam, Burma, Thailand, Finland, Iraq, Greece, all of the Slavic states, and more.

Besides, America was unofficially in the war in 1939 when we began supplying Great Britain, to the tune of over 200 cargo ships of supplies per week (including illegal arms and munitions). Also, the Flying Tigers assisted China in combating Japan with the U.S. War Dept. blessings and supplies.

What a mess!

On the bright side, the hardships of the War's aftermath introduced SPAM to kitchens throughout the World...

If that is a bright side to war then it is truly a dismal enterprise.
