dewar was a chemist and physicist at oxford university who invented cordite (smokeless gunpowder) and, in 1894, the dewar's flask, a double-shelled bottle with a vacuum between the glass shells.
it kept hot liquids warm and cold liquids cool.
two german glassblowers began making the bottles for commercial use, holding a contest to name the bottles. the winning name was "thermos", derived from "therme", the greek word for heat.
