The new Idol of America

So what did you guys think of last nights show.

I had no idea who David Archileta was until a week ago. Turns out that i was at his house this last Christmas for a party.

To me i think David Cook deserves it. I dont think America wanted another "Josh Groban" The news said that he had all the little girls voting for him and kids and how "cute" it was that the girls loved him so much. Thats just it, people didnt want cute, they want sexy and energetic. Someone who is wild.

But none the less they both are dang good and could outsing me.

What did you guys think?

kitchenelf 05-22-2008 09:54 AM

They are both very good in their own very different ways. From the beginning, when I would mention him and people would say, now which one is David Cook?, I thought he would win. He has his own style and it's all the things you said.

LT72884 05-22-2008 09:59 AM

yup, he is very good. i would have loved to see the other dave win because he is from my town and what not. But, he will go just as far i think. When cook played with ZZ top, thats when i knew he was going to win, even though the vote had all ready been set.

GB 05-22-2008 10:06 AM

David A can sing. No doubt about it. He is way too "Disney" to win a competition like this though. David C was much better suited to win the competition and I think he deserved it.

LEFSElover 05-22-2008 10:10 AM

I'd wanted DA to win all along. Just such a seemingly sweetheart of a kid, but then, that doesn't sell records. I think his voice is beautiful though, more so than DC. DC has grown on me and honestly it didn't matter to me who won. I'm not a voter...it was pretty equal. I've decided DC is just a lovely specimen of a young gentleman though:brows:

George Michael

Thought it so unusual that at the moment they introduced George Michael I had just turned on the tv. I was crazy. did not have it recorded and then to turn on at that moment, how great is that? He certainly has gotten older. Hence, why the shades? His voice is still the same and will always remember the songs he sang. Has a real story that he should write but then I assume the reporters would really persecute him even more. I don't know how he stands it, seems like a real sensitive man.

Oh, the reason I was so happy is in July we are going to one of his concerts in Chicago. What a hassle we had trying to even get the tickets! Since they think it is his last tour here in US I sure hope we get to see him and that it isn't canceled. always negative thinking, not good. I will get to see him and I will tell you all about it.

did you see Paula crying while he was singing? Yes, I agree with the outcome of the show. This David Cook seems like a professional already. You don't think this is fixed do you? Start to wonder when someone looks so good already. From Blue Springs MO. Brad Pitt from MO too. Must have something to do with the water!

LOL, yeah disney is right. If he was a little bit older than he could have won. I just think its cool that Dave A. actually made that far. To bad he just didnt add any more spunk to his style. But thats ok. He is a really nice kid.

With media and politics, there is a chance it could have been pre chosen. Im not saying that it is. It almost seems that its really the judges who pick and not the people but i really think that it is the people. I dont think it has become corrupt yet.

BTW i have no idea who George M. is. i had no idea who half those people are except Gladys knight, when my sister was on her mission in Hollywood, she used to eat dinner at her house every so often.

Did you get to see George Michael sing on the show? I guess he was before your time. Gladys Knight was good one too. I really don't think George was in public while going through the ordeals he has had.

LOL, yeah a lil reality therapy is good every once in a while.

LOL jk. At least i knew who Brian Adams was.

GB 05-22-2008 11:50 AM

Ahh Brian Adams, my very first concert. The Hooters opened for him. No doubt you have never heard of them!

Actually some other winners of this competition have been just as "disney" last year's winner Jordin Sparks was the same age as David and just as syrupy sweet....I just love that a rocker won this year...America chose to go a different way than usual and it was nice to see. David Cook really deserved to win...

Nope i have not. No idea who or what they are for that matter.

Are they a pretty cool band?

They were another 80's band that had a couple of hits. They were a lot of fun. Kids today probably would not appreciate them now though.

LT72884 05-22-2008 12:27 PM

I see, like the band; Men with out hats and their hit "Pop Goes The World"

Wart 05-22-2008 12:55 PM

I'm trying to remember my first concert ... Dave Mason?

So Cook Won? Cool, I have it recorded but haven't watched it yet. I won't spoil it for Wife.

I feel D A has the better voice but throughout this season he struck me as being bland, lacking in personality and having no real fire. Way too much of a MaMas boy. And children singing ADULT songs has always irked me.

Cook has more gut, but that wouldn't be too difficult.

I guess I should watch the finale .....

Breathless singing and big notes seemed to be the order of this season. It seemed a schtick used by most (?) of the contestants. Seemed to me breathless or loud was their major tools.

Don't worry--you're not so old, I know who George Michael is and I'm only a couple years older than LT. Name any band from the 60's, 70's, or 80's and I'll likely know or at least will have heard of them.

Back on topic...I haven't watched a single episode (no tv) but I think my mom really wants David A to win because she likes his singing, but also thinks it might be better if he doesn't win so he can focus on going on a mission to be a good example to other young men of his religion (he happens to be a member of the same religion as my mother and I).

It seems likely to me though, that he is just too young, and maybe if he tries again in a few years he will have more success.

Here's a spoiler if you want to know who won: Newest 'American Idol' crowned - CNN.com

If you read through the thread, this is what we are discussing:wink:

Wow talk about a walk down memory lane!!!

The Hooters were nothing like that band other than the fact that they were both 80's bands.

David A is just too young right now. I think in a few years when he is a bit more seasoned and if he can break away from his dad a bit then he will be able to do really well for himself.

babetoo 05-22-2008 02:47 PM

i'll bet i haven't seen fifteen min. all together , any of these shows.

my grandson's wife to be got picked in first round, then didn't go any farther. has a very pure clean voices. nice girl but not the norm in looks

maybe simon's tendancy to insult and be cruel put me off.

babe

Wart 05-22-2008 02:56 PM

Simon was the most honest person there.

{added while GB was posting}

I would write what I do with the fast forward button during the critique phase but there is at least one mod who thinks my not wanting to listen to mindless prattle is disrespectful in a personal way. (?)

So what.

{/addition}

GB 05-22-2008 03:01 PM

I completely agree Wart. He may not be the most tactful, but he tells it like he sees it.

jeninga75 05-22-2008 07:20 PM

I never watch the show. Watched it last night because there was absolutly nothing on.

David C. had a presence about him. David A. was just a kid with a voice. (Keep in mind like I said, this was the only time I watched it.)

When they went to break and said One Republic was next I was planted in front of the TV (Probably my favorite band right now behind Maroon 5.) I was all into the song, then David A. popped out... to me he did nothing to compliment the song. When David C. came out with ZZ Top, he had me rocking out.

Loved seeing Bryan Adams and all the other performers. At the end when they started out with some George Michael songs, I was like... there's no way... then there he was... awsome.

my husband couldn't not mention his clown shoes though. I said, "What?". So we had to rewind and sure enough, David Cook had on these turn way up pointy toe things on his feet that looked like something a jester would wear.

Wart 05-23-2008 01:34 AM

For me the highlight of the show was the Graham Nash Brooke White duet.

And Paula was about falling out.

quicksilver 05-23-2008 05:12 AM

I'm with babetoo. When I did turn it on the other night, channel surfing, I thought D C sang very well, but too cutsey-pretty for my taste. I didn't see D A perform, but the bed hair is not my thing either and he didn't seem to have charisma.

GB 05-23-2008 08:08 AM

quicksilver, I think you got your D's confused. DC is the one with bed hair and DA is the cutesy one.

LT72884 05-23-2008 10:11 AM

Yeah ZZ top was good and to see DC play the guitar with them AND sing. that was cool.

Clienta 05-23-2008 10:48 AM

I was really glad David Cook won. He has a much broader range than David Archuletta. All throughout the show, David Archuletta sounded the same while David Cook really challenged himself with some of the songs. I would buy a David Cook CD, I wouldn't buy a David Archuletta CD.

My first concert was Andy Gibb...I thought he was dreamy. I have to laugh just thinking about it.

Wart 05-23-2008 02:24 PM

The DVR stopped recording about one second after Seacrest announced the winner.

That was enough to see DA's immediate reaction to coming in second.

He smiled.

In retrospect, noting the muted personality and lack of emotion, I'm thinking there is a possibility DA is on some pretty stout happy pills.

either that or he is very reserved. At his age he might be more reserved than anything. here that is kind of the norm. when i was his age. i was always intimidated. it took alot out of me to be myself. Hisd house at christmas time is pretty cool. they have automated lights and what not.

quicksilver 05-24-2008 07:19 AM

GB, thanks for the clarification. "The shorter one" too cutsey-pretty............................

Michelemarie 05-24-2008 08:58 AM

I'm glad DC won - DA is good but not what I want to listen to - at least on a consistent basis - I will listen to DC all day long.......................Like Chris Daughtry - I love that guy

Chopstix 05-24-2008 09:36 AM

The AI finale showed in the U.S. at 11am my time in Bangkok but was only going to air six hours later at 5pm. So even when some people got wind of the winner through the web, I made sure I didn't learn who it was until I saw the show for myself.

Well, an hour into the show, just as Seacrest was counting down to the announcement, there was thunder and lightning outside and my cable tv signal went off. I couldn't believe it. It was down for more than 15 min! I had to switch to another channel to check for the cable signal because I didn't want a spoiler in case they've already made the announcement. I didn't know how long the show would run, whether for one hour only or longer.

So after waiting in agony for half the day, I had to wait another 2 hours to watch the replay.

It was worth it though. I was SO happy it was David Cook.

In the Kitchen 05-26-2008 07:12 PM

Did any of you know who Donna Summer was? She was one of the people that sang with the group! One of the 'older' ones. Also ZZ Top was featured. this post is really kind of scrambled as I never get to see a show from beginning to end. Have to go back and watch from beginning. Only got to see the winner and then t oday saw the whole thing. One show I am planning on keeping. Anyone see Ryan Seacrest get u an dance? Also Seal was on too. Really had terrific show. Did you dig the shoes that DC had on?
