Automatic Salt & Pepper Grinders/Mills

Does anyone here use them? And what do you think?

I've thought about maybe buying a set but, it seems to me, although they look nice and convenient, it would take away the 'fun' of grinding up your own salt & pepper. That's part of the fun of cooking, in my opinion. I like twisting my own mills (or even just shaking shakers is a goofy little thing I enjoy). But still wanted to see if these things have made a difference for anyone.

Oh, most definitely. I personally think they're very cool. But I'm not sure I'm willing to give up the fun of grinding my own pepper over the food. There's just something special about hearing that "crank and crunch"

At least until the novelty wears off, I'm pretty sure those would be fun to use too.

Thanks, Andy. I think the novelty would wear off with me as well because, like I said, I love the 'manual' twist of the standard S&P mills.

Friends of mine have them and they definitely are a talking point if people have never seen them before. A light comes on as well

You have salt grinders so the pepper grinders aren't lonely. They work great on all the "special" salts people buy.

The one place that I've heard complaints about manual salt/pepper grinders is in the Pot Luck line. One has to set one's plate down to use most. I used to have a single-hand pepper grinder. Haven't seen it in some years...must have gotten broken. Sometimes, I wish I had the single-hand grinder again...when cooking.

salt grinders provide "fresh salt" from 300,000 year old salt deposits . . .

anyone who does not have the wrist strength of Hercules,,,, the crank handle version works most splendidly. "twisting wrist" grinder have zilch appeal to me.

I personally don't, but I suppose it depends on the type of salt purchased. If it's 'chunky', one might want to put it into a mill to fresh-grind it into a finer consistency.

That is why I have considered getting a salt grinder.

I have 3 grinders. One for salt, one for black pepper and one for mixed color pepper. I use them all, as needed.

While on my visit to see him, my nephew asked what I did with my old grinders. I asked whether he needed a grinder, and he said he didn't but highly recommended having one to grind Oreos over ice cream.

Hmmmm....I like the "mini" oreos...and the "mini" Reese's!!! If you decide to use them as ice cream mix-ins, then I recommend quartering them.

Well dang, I would have never thought of that.

Still, knowing me, I'd just put the cookies into a baggie and pound them with a heavy spoon.

Well, he is *my* nephew. Pounding cookies with a spoon in a baggie won't give you consistent-sized crumbs.
