Growing up the tradition was to head to church Christmas eve for the candlelight service. Getting home we'd get into pj's and get to open the gifts sent by our dear friends from Indiana. As we grew up the only thing that changed was inviting dear friends over after church. With my own family we did the same thing. My kids got to open the gifts from their daycare provider (Granny Smith who is now over 100 years old). I'd stay up making sure everything was done and would watch the Nutcracker with Rudolf Nureyev on PBS as I filled stockings and got the food ready for the morning.
