Try looking for a small ceramic dish with a bed of low pointy nubs made of the same material (almost like very short bristles but rigid) for grating garlic or ginger. Sometimes they come with stiff plastic brushes for collecting the grated stuff.
I've seen this in some kitchenware stores in Asia, and surprisingly, it's everywhere in southern France (hand-painted with sunflowers and what-not) for making aioli and etc.
