Since I travel ALOT, I get to eat a bunch on the road. I find that, after fifteen years of travel, I usually look for "comfort food" to pig out on (it's company money.) When I travel, there are several places that will always get me to pull over. In no particular order:
Cracker Barrel : nobody can beat the "country fried breakfast" for a breakfast belly bomb. The "greens and beans" plate with corn muffins is great for lunch and SHUT UP! about the meatloaf dinner!
Big Boy : they invented the Big Boy, and everybody since (inc. MacDonalds) has copied it. The BB Combo with Fries and slaw smothered in BB seasoned salt is the ultimate burger experience.
Culvers Butterburger: Midwest chain has the second best chain burgers. They have the BEST fries though, Crinkle cut and up to 5" long! they also have respectable chili and great ice cream. Kind of like a DQ on steroids. In Illinois, Wisconsin,Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, and other limited markets.
In-N-Out Burger : Cal. , Az, Nev., Mostly, a favorite of California transplants. Only offers burgers, fries, shakes. Always busy. Always good.
Smokey Bones/ Famous Daves : Hey some BBQ is better than no BBQ when you are on the road! Last week I arrived in Green Bay at 6:30 pm. I checked into the Hampton. It was 6 degrees and dark. I started out going down the road in search of something to eat. 1 mile and there's a Smokey Bones. Combo Plate, Brunswick Stew, and the fresh doughnuts. Made me feel warm all over!
Just my thoughts! Have Fun! Woodman
