Anyone been there recently? I'm thinking about surprising DH with a weekend trip there for his Christmas Present.
I've never flown and have no desire (terrified) ... but I know he'd have a blast there so I'll suck it up and fly for him.

Anyway, tell me about your experience and what you'd do over again and not do over again......any tips would be great too.

Also, how do I go about setting this all up? I want to find like a packaged deal with airfare, hotel and maybe some meals included. A legitamite site would be great.

What a good wife to brave flying for her hubby!

I was just there for the first time in April for a wedding.

If you are close to Indy, I know Southwest flies there non-stop (they have package deals too, look on their website)

Las Vegas is a big overwhelming, the strip is just very long and crowded. My hubby described it as Disney Land for grownups. On the plus side, there are LOTS of good places to eat (including buffets!).
The hotels I liked based on my browsing around their lobbies:
The Wynn
Paris Paris
Caesars Palace
The Venetian

I also liked the topography of the area. We rented a car and drove to Hoover dam and through the Valley of Fire, its very cool there.
I was only there 4 days but we are considering another long w/end out there to enjoy the restaurants and shows. My husband wants to see the Cirque du Soleil's Beatles LOVE show.

Another site to get you started is www.tripadvisor.com, these are candid reviews of hotels/resorts and best places to stay and things to do. Just type in Las Vegas in your search.

FUN!!!!

We always pick a cheaper hotel ( Circus Circus) not at all fancy but... you're never in the room anyway so why pay the high prices??

We book through Alaska airlines vacation packages. Good prices and helpful people.

HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!

Thanks so much guys! I'll go check out the sites.....I am near Indianapolis.

Toots was there anything that you wished you'd of done or seen or anything you wouldn't redo?

lol... you could always take your hubby to THE GIRLS OF GLITTLE GULCH.
Just kidding there sizz.

Hit the big casinos just walking through them is fun.
Walking down the strip is an adventure in itself.

What kinds of things do you guys like to do??

I wish I could have eaten at more of the good restaurants. SERIOUSLY. There are many celebrity/chef restaurants there - good eats!
I am not much of a gambler. We did one day/night of casinos and the rest of the time we explored all the hotels and shops on the strip. We didnt have time for any shows, next time I would like to see some shows.
You'll have fun people watching there....

We're not big gamblers.........we'll just probably spend one night doing that. We're more for the food, shows, shopping, etc....
I'm just afraid that we'll miss out on something that Vegas is famous for and we'll be sorry we didn't experience it.

Make sure you go to the old part of Vegas too it's just a short bus ride away.

It's pretty neat... great outdoor light show.

OH, and PM Z he'll have some great hints for you.

Sizz, we drive out there every 2-3 months. We really have a blast each time we go. You really need to search out your hotel fares. We usually get comped rooms (that's why we go so often), but on occassion, we'll bring relatives and search a place for them. Don't decide on your exact day/hotel till you've looked at them all. Nearly every hotel has down times and you can get a $200 room for $79 on the right day.
Stay where there is a lot to do without needing to drive. We like most of the ones in the nicer district.
Mandalay Bay is nice
Luxor is fun
Excalibur is a bit too cheapy, imo
MGM is okay, but nothing to write home about
New York, New York - excellent customer service, and the best irish food at "Nine Fine Irishmen"
Paris - cute!
Caesar's is nice, but so big you may get lost (!)
Flamingo's not bad, but has the best pool
Mirage used to be great but have plummeted downhill fast
Treasure Island, same as Mirage
Wynn is gorgeous, but pricey
Bellagio, again, very nice
Venitian is another nice one
Aladdin is currently under construction (turning into the Planet Hollywood soon) but it is still open.

Shopping:
Wynn is nice, but not that much (although there is a ferrari dealership inside)
Aladdin's Dessert Passage is good shopping
Caesars Forum is huge for shopping

Best Buffet: Wynn, hands down. Go no further. And, if you get there (on a weekday) at 3pm, you'll pay for lunch prices and then they start to put dinner out at 3:30.

Also, The Z lives in Vegas. He can help you out too, I'm sure!

Sizz, I posted a response, but it did not post. Food and hotels are inexpensive... so I wouldn't look for a package deal. Look for affordable air fare and a rental car, since you're not driving - or stay on the strip w/i walking distance.

I would spend the $ on a good hotel -- unless you don't plan on staying in the room much. Go to Frommers to get the lowdown on restaurants, hotels, etc. Bring warm clothing, as it's cold in the desert at night.

New Years Eve was one of my best experiences in Vegas. Downside - almost everything was booked solid - and took a hotel I was not happy with. Vegas is one of my fave getaways - and too much to list here. Shopping - well I'm in L.A. - and the prices are exceedingly high for touristy clothing. Browse if you like. Check out the helicopter ride.

Don't overpack and bring fancy clothing (as I did the first time). The dress is cas in the casinos and for site-seers. Bring a good outfit or two if you have a s****y plan.

I love going to Las Vegas - I have a cousin living there and she is always asking me to fly up. I am glad you are flying there instead of driving because it is a very boring ride.

You could go to a travel agent for your tickets and airfare and tell her that you want to stay in an inexpensive hotel. The rooms are all the same and besides you will be out visiting the other hotels and gambeling. They have the greatest buffets and I particular remember the brunch at the Mirage. You won't believe your eyes.

I also enjoy the shows but if there is anything particular you and your hubby want to see I would make the show reservation with the travel agent.

I know you guys will have a wonderful time and take plenty of pictures.

I didn't have the food, but I will vouch for every single beer they have on tap at Nine Fine Irishman!

And ESPNZone
And The Monte Carlo Brewpub
And the Triple 7 Brewpub at Main Street Station
And just about every other microbrew (bottle or draft) at just about every casino!!

I agree with the find the best deal you can on a room, since you're hardly ever there, anyways! (Although we prefer it to be clean, not just cheap. Clean is good!)

Some things to do besides gambling:

1. People Watch. IMO Vegas is one of the best places on earth for this.

2. Eat. Buffets are good for price and quantity, but there are some excellent restaurants there too.

3. See a show that you pay money for. If you like that kind of thing, try to get tickets early and work your stay around it.

4. See a show that you don't pay money for. See #1 above, plus the fountains in front of the Bellagio.

5. Enjoy a Thrill. The roller coasters and other rides @ NY NY, Sahara, Stratosphere, Circus Circu and maybe more are fun. My fave is Stratosphere because you are hanging off the building high above the strip. Go @ night.

Personally, I wasn't impressed much with the shopping there. I also love to gamble, so I spent most of my time doing that.

I cannot wait to go back!

Here are my suggestions. I'm not much for gambling either.

Fremont Street Experience - go at night, they have shows on this HUGE overhaed screen every 30 minutes

Luxor - this is a place you just have to see, it's very cool

MGM Grand - The lion habitat is cool

Bellagio - very nice casino

Cirque du Soleil - there are several of these shows, from family oriented to more risque adult only shows, get tickets before you get out there. The more popular shows get sold out months early from what I hear.

Hoover Dam - If your husband is into machinery or engineering, etc he will love this tour

There's so much to see in Vegas. You could stay there for weeks and not see it all. If you tell us what you are interested in it would help a lot!:)

Please please please get the window seat! I've only been to Vegas once, about 6 years ago. I am not into gambling, but it was a business trip for my husband, so I took the kids and did the shows and swam while he worked. We had some magnificent meals. Emeril's Delmonico was magnificent. The hotels are beautiful.

I mention the window seat because, fear or not, you are going to be so amazed by what you see as you fly in. I flew in from the east coast, so for the most part, it was just green beneath..then came the mountains which are a breathtaking to be above...but then, you're over desert and there is nothing to look at, until in the distance you see mecca in the middle of nowhere. The lights and buildings are crystal clear in the middle of a desert. If you fly in in the evening, the lights are wonderful.

Greetings from 'Sin City'!

You would obviously have to pick a weekend before you search for flights and rates, as they change depending upon the month and day of the week. You can usually get better rates Sun-Thu, but if you don't want to or can't take the time off work, weekends are a good time to be here. You'll get the 'Vegas experience' either way, because it's crowded all the time these days (mid-week used to be kinda dead. The weekend will be MORE crowded... it just depends what you like).

I guess you wouldn't be planning to go immediately, so you may want to plan your trip around something special to you... such as an anniversary or something. I would check the web for the tour dates of his favorite band or musical artist. Most stop in Vegas, and I think it would blow his mind to get that kind of Christmas gift (he'll open it to find two concert tickets to see Elton John or Mariah Carey - - or whoever he's into, and then see that the concert is in Vegas... THEN you can surprise him with the second part of the present... Whoo HOOO!!!).

If you PM me and let me know the dates you're thinking of, I could let you know what's going on in town at that time. Everybody seems to enjoy different things. I see that gambling isn't your 'thing' but it's good that you want to plan SOME time for it. Put a few nickels through the slots, but take one of the free 'Craps' lessons offered by a few of the casinos (like Saturday mornings at the Gold Coast) and get involved in some of those lively games. Great Vegas-y fun (and be aware that some places allow a lower minimum bet than others).

There are lots of fun and interesting things to do for free (or for low cost), some of which have already been mentioned. The Freemont Street Experience is downtown, away from the Strip in 'old Vegas'. This was the original Vegas Strip, with lots of flashy lights and neon. The street itself was closed to vehicular traffic some time ago and a giant TV-like screen now canopies the street for a couple of blocks. They have free live entertainment frequently under the canopy as well as lower limit gambling in historic casinos like the Golden Nugget and Binions.

One "can't miss" freebie is the Fountain Show in front of Bellagio (especially at night). Did I say CAN'T MISS?!? For an even better viewing, take the elevator ($9 each) to the top of the Eiffel Tower across the street for a truly breathtaking experience. Inside the Bellagio you'll find a beautiful botanical garden area just off the (also beautiful) hotel lobby. Each season they decorate the gardens with a new and spectacular theme. Come to think of it, they just changed it... (note to self: check it out this weekend).

If you like shopping, many of the major casinos on the Strip have shopping malls built right into them. I think my favorite is the Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace, but there are also very interesting 'theme malls' inside the Aladdin and the Venetian (Forum Shops are the biggest I think).

Although I haven't been yet, they say the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay is well worth the $20 (I think) each admission.

I think buffets are over-rated. I can't really eat enough to really enjoy them, and the food is usually not as good as some other places. By the time I sample a few of the many, many dishes... I'm full and don't feel good. I'd rather have a nice meal somewhere (such as... oh, I don't know... Mesa Grill inside Caesar's Palace springs to mind first. Very, very good food there, and not rediculo-expensive either - try the salmon). I also like 'le creperie' inside Paris. I like the berries n cream crepe. YummO!

I usually find best fares when I use travelocity or orbitz. Both are pretty user-friendly sites that I've had good luck with in the past.

If I can be of any more help, please let me know by PM (in case I miss the thread or something).

Viva, Viva, Las Vegazz!

And the room prices are usually double or more on Friday through Sunday nights. At least they are in Reno.

Been to Vegas twice. First time stayed in Luxor. It was so-so. I was back a couple months ago and stayed at Paris Hotel. Loved it. We got a relatively good price since we booked early (a few months ahead is even the better). Avoid Fri and Sat. Try checking in on Sun and you'll probably get better rates. Room rates go up starting Thurs. Try to get a hotel on the center strip.

The buffet at the Bellagio is a mere shadow of what it was years ago. You can avoid this. The Le Village buffet at Paris was very good. If there's a restaurant I'd like to go back to, it is Bouchon at the Venetian Hotel. It's an authentic French bistro and the food, ambience, and service are excellent. I recently read Anthony Bourdain's review of Bouchon and he was all praises. (He concedes to the superiority of their Roast Chicken.) Too bad I read his review AFTER we had left Vegas and only then found out it's operated by the chef of The French Laundry!

Things you shouldn't miss:

Bellagio fountains (go right up to it to appreciate its full effect with music)
The Bellagio
The Venetian
Paris
New York, New York
Caesar's Palace and Forum shops
Pirate ship Show at Treasure Island

Have fun!!!
