Curious, Why Don't More Folks Post Photos?

I just love pictures of food.
I'm wondering why more folks
here at DC don't post photos of their creations?
I just go nuts for those.
Just Curious...
How about you? What do you think?

Cooking Goddess 09-26-2015 10:08 PM

I usually think of a photo after I've already eaten a bunch of my subject!

I do take pics of my dinner most nights, just in case, but they never look as good as the plate that was my subject. I guess I'm photography challenged in my old age - or phone camera age, more like it.

Andy M. 09-26-2015 10:08 PM

For me, there are several reasons.

1. It's a pain in the butt to take pictures with my camera, download them onto my computer then upload them to DC.

2. When I'm in the midst of making dinner, I never think of stopping to take a picture.

3. I don't give a lot of thought to plating pretty food. Just look back at some of my food photos.

No that I have a slick new iPhone, maybe I'll get into the habit. At least #1 won't be an issue.

Dawgluver 09-26-2015 10:14 PM

My food just isn't that photogenic. It's tasty, but not all that purty. And it won't hold still long enough to get its picture taken!

CrazyCatLady 09-26-2015 11:48 PM

I don't for several reasons:

1. Usually it's still hissing and growling and backing into dark corners where the light isn't good.

2. The airsickness bags next to the plates aren't the pretty designer ones.

3. We only use plates when the troughs and wooden spoons are all in the dishwasher.

4. There's always three or more cats on the table washing their butts.

5. The food looks like burnt offerings and I don't want anyone here to think we have odd religious practices.

6. The biohazard tape around the stove hasn't been removed by the EPA yet and it looks weird.

So you see, I'm such a caring and considerate poster here; I just couldn't do that to all of you wonderful people.

Kayelle 09-27-2015 12:31 AM

LOL @ CCL.

I post as many as I think worthy of posting, none are even close to professional though.

I prefer uploading from my camera to photobucket.com rather than here however.
Photobucket makes it so durn easy and I think the pictures from there are superior for posting here.

I'm right there with you though Kgirl. I love seeing pictures of food, and appreciate every one.

Folks, it doesn't always have to be magazine perfect, it's just us...

[not so perfect photo of a plate while we were in Hawaii... Teri Steak, rice and veg, kinda started to eat and then oops, remembered to take a photo]

Cheryl J 09-27-2015 12:46 AM

I post quite a few pics here...:ermm::lol: I'll post a food photo if I think it looks tasty, or if the sunset is a particularly beautiful one, or if there's a grandkid pic I want to share, or a road trip pic, or if I went to the farmers market and got a good haul, or....or.....

But as mentioned above, I ALWAYS love looking at member's pics. Always. I don't think anyone cares if they're 'magazine' quality or not, we just love to see pics.

I've got some awesome pics of hairless cats....oh, you mean people and food.

Sorry, wrong forum.

PrincessFiona60 09-27-2015 01:10 AM

I'm not a compulsive picture taker. My phone is barely out of the stone age and doesn't do pictures and I hate carrying extra around with me because I leave it lying or it wanders off.

medtran49 09-27-2015 03:52 AM

We just don't think of it. I nearly forgot to take a photo of our Greek dinner the other night and we had just talked about taking a photo about 10 minutes before.

CrazyCatLady 09-27-2015 04:11 AM

Bleah...I'll try, but the last I heard I have to clear the pics with the EPA.

creative 09-27-2015 04:25 AM

I bought a digi camera just to take photos of my dishes for this forum. (I have posted just 2 photos though so far). I agree with Dawgluver...most of my food is tasty but not that photogenic.

Silversage 09-27-2015 06:12 AM

A number of years ago I used to post a lot of pictures to several forums. Over time, as the membership shifted in most forums, it seemed that pictures became less common. Most of the picture posters seemed to leave the forums. First facebook, then instagram made picture sharing simpler. Those other venues also allow you to restrict your social group to just people you like, which has some obvious advantages.

Even facebook has changed. It, too, has become a gathering place for a more mature demographic. The young folks with the fancy phones now use instagram, snapchat, etc. Coincidently, they are also the ones who are trying new foods, cultures, techniques, restaurants, etc. I watch what my nieces and nephews are posting to instagram and I'm blown away.

I guess after seeing those it's hard to believe that anyone would be interested in my dinner plate.

I posted some pics last week, but not in the dinner area. They are in the BBQ and Smokin' Meats section. When you cook something "Low and Slow", you have time to take pictures in between beers, err I mean adding splits to the fire box.:lol:

LOL!!!

Truth be told, I've not cooked anything exciting in a while. Night Shift is not nice for fancy dinners.

...and another thing.

I look at this picture and see an improperly exposed photo. Not enough light on the subject. The iCamera didn't think to use the flash. Poor photos bother me so I wouldn't normally post them.

The proliferation of smart phones which make it easy for folks to take and share pictures is great but folks aren't using any judgement as to whether or not the picture is worth sharing. The smart phone proliferates bad photography. I'm tired of seeing a photo of people where their faces are in shadow because they were photographed in front of a window and the extra light caused the camera to under expose the faces.

Rant over.

LPBeier 09-27-2015 11:53 AM

I take pictures of my cakes and my furbabies. I am also one who doesn't think about taking a picture until my meal is a minimum of half over!

I have the government free phone for elderly folks. The original phone that is provided did not take pictures. It was a tiny phone and difficult to use even for texting.

So I bit the bullet and bought my own phone at a discount price. My phone now takes photos but I can't upload them even to my computer. I would have to pay for that service. I do pay the grand sum of $5.00 a month for an extra 250 minutes past my free minutes that I get. I am cheap and that is all I am willing to pay for a free service.

My Kodak camera is handy. I just never think to grab it.

Also my table is a colonial type one. Both leaves fold down. I keep it that way as it is a pain to keep it open. Not much room in a studio apartment. So I eat while sitting on my bed and my dish is on my night stand.

Also I never eat a full normal meal. All you would see is a picture of a bowl of peas with butter, or a plate with just the meat, etc.

But I have to agree. I do love food porn.

Kaneohegirlinaz 09-27-2015 05:52 PM

Wow, there's some real passion here about food photos.
For me, I like to take pictures of the dishes that I make so that I can remember what I made and it'll prompt me to try something again.

I also enjoy taking pictures of the food that we have out, mostly when we're traveling. I like to order foods that I wouldn't normally make and then ask questions about it. Many a time I have been invited back into the kitchen, but without my camera and I always ask if it's okay first to take photos, some chefs don't want you to take pictures and post them on Social Media because of exactly what Andy M said... poor quality photos, not to mention bad attitudes on the dinners part, sour grapes and all.

I have a digital camera (have had one type or another for many many years) and I upload the photos to my laptop and then load them on to memory sticks.

GotGarlic 09-27-2015 08:57 PM

I can't find my digital camera so I use my Android phone. I have it connected to my Dropbox account so pictures are automagically copied there and then to my laptop. Love that 😍

I take some of my pictures on the counter or the stovetop; for the stovetop, sometimes I lay down a kitchen towel so it looks like a place mat  I get really good light from the light above the stove.

Love that word!

roadfix 09-28-2015 02:40 PM

For me, it just kind of wore off. The excitement is not there, unless I create something extraordinary and want to show and tell everyone about it. :)))

That's some might fine lookin' dishes, GG!!

Kaneohegirlinaz 09-28-2015 05:12 PM

What I've discovered here at DC is there are two ways to post a photo to a thread.
The easiest technique for me is utilizing the 'paperclip' icon in the tool bar at the top, rather than the 'picture-Insert Image' icon.
