If anyone is looking for a free way to usher in the holiday season without the huge crowd the Rockefeller Center tree lighting brings, head to South Street Seaport on Friday evening, the evening after Thanksgiving.

They have a very nice tree in the commons and have an hour or so of caroling, a visit from Santa, some elves and the Grinch, too. After the singing they light the tree and do a few more songs. Lou and I went last year and it was very nice. Easy to get to South Street Seaport by taking subway, so no need to try to drive down there. The event starts at 6pm. We arrived about 45 minutes early and had a great spot to watch everything from.
