TRUTH !!
A mission, a small civilian settlement, and a military fort were established
in the San Francisco region in 1776. The town was named Yerba Buena after a
herb growing in the region, "hierba buena" meaning "good herb" in Spanish.
The name remained Yerba Buena until 1847 when it was changed to San
Francisco soon after the Californian region was won by the USA in the
Mexican-American War. In January, 1847, the population was a mere 1,000.
This increased to 25,000 in only two years thanks to the discovery of gold
in California.
