TRUTH !!
Yes it's true. It was powered by a steam engine(!) while on the surface, hence the chimneys. When diving, the boilers had to be extinguished, the chimneys lowered into the superstructure and a battery powered propulsion unit engaged. This would take at least 5 minutes. The problems were not all over at that point though. The maximum safe operating depth was just 200 feet but given that they were 339 feet long, it meant that the stern would still be on the surface when the bow reached the maximum safe depth even with a fairly shallow dive angle. Only 18 were ever built and six of those sank accidentally.
