Decorating cupcakes?

I've been asked to make cupcakes for a birthday party, for which I am seeking advice and ideas.

Theme; vintage Barbie for a woman who collects dolls.

Hot pink frosting if possible
Vintage Barbie designs
No fondant.

For flavors I was thinking vanilla cake with strawberry frosting, unless there is a way to make the color hot pink?

I need a few different ideas for designs, and how to create them without going too crazy since I'm not that great at decorating cakes.

One idea I have is to make the Barbie silhouette by melting a thin layer of chocolate and cutting it out with a template.
If this would work, could I just print the template out on computer paper or is there a different way to do it?
