Growing up, all of the women in my family had an Aloe Vera cactus in their kitchens. It was the "go-to" in case of a burn of any kind. The soothing jell in one of the "leaves" (which look like an octopus tentacle) can be released after breaking it off the plant. Then, trim any spikes away that are along the edges. Then by cutting across the leaf and squeezing the outer covering of it the soothing jell will ooze out to treat your burn.

Most of the time the Aloe Vera plant lived near the kitchen stove.

Do you have one ? This is the season when you can find them easily and affordably at nurseries.

But my wife wants them out of the yard, claiming they’re poisonous to her cats.

Where I grew up, we had them growing in the yard. Our dogs never messed with them. But, cats are stupid, so they may have issues.

Good question.
I took a cutting from one planted it by my kitchen window.
That one cutting has now branched out into more and more plants.
Some are larger than the others. I like how they have filled in nicely a once boring to look at corner.
My mom always had a plant in her kitchen. She was always ready with a cutting just for me. I'm highly allergic to poison oak.
Just it being around I'd catch it. The gel worked great for the itching.

Munky.
