Kleine-Levin Syndrome or KLS (also known as Sleeping Beauty Syndrome, or Rip van Winkle disease) is a neurological disorder characterized by recurring periods of excessive amounts of sleep and altered behavior.
Sleeping for 10 days may sound like a dream to those of us who burn the candle at both ends, but for Louisa Ball, who suffers from this rare condition, it means missed holidays, celebrations, and school days.
KLS is a little-understood condition that has no known cause or cure. It causes episodes of excessive sleeping that can go on for weeks and is associated with behavior changes such as irritability, hypersexuality, and binge eating.
In Ball's case, her parents must maintain constant vigilance when she is in the midst of a sleep episode, forcing her to wake each day to eat and go to the bathroom before returning to sleep.
