That makes so much sense. After your reply i asked my wife if she knew what it was and she said the same as you... but im glad i found this forum in the process of my search. Thanks!
 
That's the kind of zester that I had for many years, until the Microplane came around. There is also one with just one cutter, but larger than those holes - that one has both in one - to cut a long strip of zest, about 1/8" wide, more for garnishing, and drinks.

I have one too. I almost always forget about until I have done something else. I like the look of the little slivers and curls of zest that the little holes make.
 
I used the channel notch to remove pieces of peel and make flower patterns for pickled vegetables for a party. I added both the slices and the shreds to the bowl (hat tip @K'girl).
