Canning Small tomatoes with vegetables

My mom used to can several things, and i learned alot from her. The one thing i never got was she canned small tomatoes with onions in pint jars, and the skins were still on the tomatoes. I really believe the onions were placed in the jar raw. Does anyone know of something like this? also the liquid was clear but not vinegary.

What you are describing sounds like something packed in brine, then pressure canned. Pressure canning would be the only safe way to can something like that that isn't pickled.
