I lived in Okinawa, Japan for 3 years at the end of the Vietnam War but I was a young child and that was 55 years ago...I'd love to go back. Visited Kyoto for a few days too. I remember it all being fascinating. I'm sure it's still amazing but after all this time it's got to be much different now.
