Should I toss my brown rice?

You should probably toss it. Rice can go bad. Did you smell it? It may have an old smell to it i.e., rancid, which is your clue.

The off smell seems to nail it. If I am not sure of something like that, will cook a bit of it.

I've changed my ways in recent years to speed up the use of brown rice -- I make large batches when I have the time and then freeze in to individual portions in vacuum-seal bags.

You can also take it one step better and dehydrate the cooked rice. This makes "real" instant rice, not the commercial stuff in the stores.
