I'm glad to hear the jars in canada are not so over priced.
The plastic on the tattlers are a white stiff plastic. They don't 'ping' or anything. I know they are food safe.
 
@blissful Thank you! I also read that one person suggested you place a tiny dot on the bands each time you use them to get an idea how often they had been used. How many uses do you typically get from each band?
 
@Kathleen I don't mark my lids or my rubber rings. I've been using them for quite a few years and I haven't replaced any of them yet. If they stretch or get wobbly, or if they seem too thin, I'd throw them out. That source for tattlers also has just the rubber rings and I'd order them if I needed any.
I can apples once a year at harvest, can pears once a year at harvest, once a year tomatoes at harvest...so when we empty the jar and lids, we wash them and I collect the lids and rings in 1 gallon ice cream containers to use the next year. I figure I've got a few years left in the ones I have. I'm probably using them at a rate of 1 time/year.
