*frumps* We cooked out last night and nearly ate on the patio.

As of now, Sunday morning, 7:30am, we're supposed to get another 4" or so (a bit fell yesterday evening too). There might also be some rain. Which means I will have to keep shoveling all that light crap so it doesn't become waterlogged and crusty. and my hands actually felt a bit better this morning...
I hope there is another can of beans in the pantry.

Oh no! Sounds like you need a snowblower. I hope your poor hands get a rest soon. Sending positive vibes.

We had a bit of snow overnight and will continue getting snow today.

by the time I got off my buttocks and outside the snow had stopped and it's heavy misty scotch style rain, so soggy heavy but....

the good news is that it hadn't gotten crusty....

taxy - There is a snowblower in the garage - all primed and ready to go. Except I don't have the shoulders to pull the cord.

On the farm I specifically bought a blower with an electric start on it. Was wonderful until it magically disappeared out of the barn one winter. After that I had the blower that went on the tractor and although I drove it often I usually left it to my neighbour and helper to operate.

I haven’t had heat in my kitchen for years so it is warmer in the refrigerator this morning than out.

In order to combat the cold and steam up the kitchen window I’m baking a half dozen banana walnut muffins. ?

Wow! Sounds like Idaho weather! Good plan on the muffins. I have a Beef Stew recipe that is cooked in the oven for 3-4 hours...

It's cold here on the Island of Montreal. -26°C = -15°F. -40° is the same in Celsius and Fahrenheit. -50°C = -58°F.

taxy, were you in Montreal in the mid/late 60's? Do you remember the deep freeze (-40's) we had for several weeks? and I think it was for about a month, end of Jan to well into Feb. But even then I don't think it reached -50. Probably with the wind chill it might have? We didn't talk a lot about wind chill back then.

I moved to Montreal in 1974. By then, we were talking about windchill. Early 1980s, I was living in a log cabin about 100 miles north of Montreal. We had a serious deep freeze there. We also had an outhouse.

I do remember when the freeze was over (went to -24 F) everyone was walking around in just sweaters and vests! It just seemed soo warm by that time! LOL

Right now the outside temperature is 9. The temperature in my failing freezer is 26. I sorted through stuff, moved the still-solid protein into a shopping tote which was then put into a cooler in the garage. There are a couple of things that, while still icy and firm in the middle, will be getting cooked this weekend. I figure once cooked, they should be safe eating for a couple of days. Come the wee hours of Sunday, the stuff will have to go back in the freezer no matter what the temperature (I've seen as low as 14.7 yesterday) since it will be close to 40 by noon. It's a good thing my freezer wasn't full - it has seven big juice jugs full of ice in there - and the ice is still solid. So far.

BTW, the wind is steady at 24 MPH, gusting to almost 40. I'm not poking my nose out of the door until Sunday's heat wave arrives.

It’s a simple trade off of living in a deteriorating city property for low rent as opposed to paying significantly more for an upscale apartment in a well maintained property/neighborhood.

I’m comfortable here and have several neighbors that share a similar mindset.

If I felt unsafe or unable to manage on my own I would move.

It seems like the more I have the less I spend. As long as I have choices I’m fine.

I feel bad for many of the people here that have limited options.

I was thinking that you must have a range like mine, with 8 pilot lights!
My kitchen is always several degrees warmer in the winter - in the summer, 7 of them are turned off.

We are getting very cold here - 13° tonight (though nothing like those areas up north!), staying in the 20s tomorrow, but back into the 40s Sunday, and 5 more days into the 50s! Crazy weather.

Pretty much the same here. I looked at the extended forecast, and after the next few days, doesnt look like its going to get below freezing ( even at night) for the foreseeable future. This worries me a bit, as I want to tap the few maple trees I have on my property, and from what I understand , the temps need to fluctuate above too below freezing for the sap to flow. Hope I didn't miss my opportunity. I did it last year, but so many bugs got into the collected sap, I tossed it all. I could have strained them out, but just knowing what it looked like messed with my mind. a few bugs wouldn't have been a ig deal, but this was just plain old gross. I got a new system which should alleviate that problem. Still going to tap then next week and hope for the best.

While our temperature is going down (currently -15F), so is the wind. This afternoon winds were steady at 24 and gusting as high as 54 . Now the wind is hanging around 11 and gusting to 35. Better yet, it's shifted around from the NW to the SW. The back yard tree off the NW corner of the house is a BIG one.
