Now I'm going to show my ignorance - Is Alton Brown the guy on Good Eats???

They were probably first called red onions by the produce guy in some grocery store who was color blind - as a lot of men are. At least us women know the difference between, beige, off-white, winter white, and tan. Why else would be need all those different shoes??? :D

:D Yep kitchenelf, Alton is the Good Eats guy.
You're probably right about the onion thing too.
Seems like if a guy can actually tell one color from another, he paints, and they call him gifted and a great artist.

I have purchased some cast iron cookware from Amazon.com at very reasonable prices. If you spend $25, shipping is free. I use my cast iron skillets and grill pan very often and really love them.

Find a Herter's or Campora (sp?) catalog. They carry partically every piece of cast iron ever made. I use to live in Podunk - pop 2200 - & every yard sale had some cast iron for sale - cheap!!

I thought fried chicken and fish HAD to be fried in a cast iron skillet to be "southern fried". LOL I love mine and bought a cheap one at a close out place similiar to "Big Lots". I should look for a bigger one as I am cooking for two now.( men eat alot)

The disadvantage of a small town is that they do not have all the best stores. The advantage is that most Saturdays there are several yard and estate sales or auctions within walking distance. I would try these sales first. Most CI comes in sets or a box lot for less than you would pay for an individual pan from Lodge, and it will have a machined finish. Try to find US made items. The foreign made ones generally are inferior. I always clean out the old gunk and start over as I like to know just what the pan was last used for. Cooking beans n/ham and cornbread in anthing other than CI in the south, if not a crime, certainly frowned upon.
