for how long can i marinate chicken with a dry rub?

the rub is salt, spices and oil..

and the chicken part is thighs

can i leave it overnight or more without a problem, then grill over coals?

I wouldn't go any longer than overnight (as in 8 to 12 hours). That salt can start to make the texture of the chicken unpleasant. I usually don't brine or marinate chicken more than 4 hours.

I think that if you leave the marinade on for too long, it will start to break up the protein molecules in the chicken.
